Dear Editor,
President Ramotar is continuing to criticize the legislative actions being taken by opposition-party leaders; his latest blasts against the opposition-leaders came during his address to the audience that attended this year’s tribute to the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan at Babu John, Port Mourant.
I believe that instead of attacking Guyana’s opposition parties which hold a one-seat majority in parliament, President Ramotar would be better served to follow the examples of ( America’s ) President Barack Obama, who has decided to sponsor social-consultations with Republican congress-persons and senators in search of compromises… it is being called “the charm offensive”.
Why I recommend President Obama, because the Democrats have the presidency and the governments, but the Republicans have the majority in the U.S. Congress and the Democrats do not have the 60 votes that they need to pass bills by themselves in the U.S. Senate.
Editor, as the saying goes “ it is, what it is” and President Ramotar should face the reality that his political-party does not have the majority in Parliament , thus I feel that he and his spokespersons would be better off seeking compromises with the opposition-parties, instead of attacking those parties or seeking solutions through the courts…judges were not elected to lead Guyana. Parliamentarians were elected to lead Guyana.
I should add that the P.P.P’s founder-leaders Dr. Cheddi Jagan when he served as head of the opposition, met quite frequently with the Burnham/Hoyte Governments and he even ended up pledging ”Critical Support” to the Burnham Government. Morris Wilson
