– ACDA receives the largest amount
A year after turning down a $10M government grant, the African Cultural and Development Association (ACDA), again made it clear that it was not interested in a government subvention.
Yesterday, a total of $7M was distributed among 49 African groups by the Ministry of Culture, to support them in carrying out their annual Emancipation Day activities.
However, there was no representative from ACDA at the Office of the President to uplift the cheque worth $5M, which was the highest figure donated. The least was $30,000.
Since 2005, the Ministry of Culture has been assisting the African culture groups with monetary donations. The presentation is part of the Ministry’s focus of promoting the Afro-Guyanese culture.
At yesterday’s presentation, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Alfred King said that they are looking forward for a “colourful emancipation” this year.
“We are expecting consciousness and awareness and not just celebration. We are hoping that these groups move from celebration to groups that would educate youngsters within the communities,” King noted.
On Friday, there will be a launching of emancipation at the Museum of African heritage. There will be a cultural presentation, distribution of prizes and on August 01, a celebration at the National Park.
