upcoming President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic that will be held at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Ground in Linden on May 20 and features Linden’s US-based Marian Burnett.
Johil Commercial, a renowned local supplier of Mining and Farming equipment located on North Road, said that it will be sponsoring the event for the third year because they are satisfied that the investment goes a long way toward the development of the sport.
“This event has certainly shown that there is a serious momentum to develop track and field, and that is, to our mind, a very good way to go. We have been privy to the level of planning that goes into this event and we are impressed,” Tristan Teekasingh said.
Teekasingh, speaking on behalf of the Company that Brazilian, Jennifer Desarz owns, stated that they believe that the event will accomplish great things and as such they will continue to seize an opportunity to partner with the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic.
President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Colin Boyce, thanked Johil for leading the way with support for the biggest club competition in Guyana. He said that he is promising all sponsors an event that will continue to raise the bar of local athletics.
“As I am committing to all our sponsors, we will continue to raise the bar with the aim of making this event a signature sport event in Guyana. I want to thank Johil for its contribution since it will ensure that our pristine plans for the event are maintained,” Boyce said.
The inaugural President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic was held in 2010 with the aim of giving track and field a prominent place in Guyana. The second edition last year created history when Aliann Pompey competed for the first time in Guyana since becoming a double Commonwealth medallist.
The 2012 event will feature Linden’s international track star, Marian Burnett competing against athletes from two Caribbean countries and Guyana. Full details of the cash prizes and those who will be competing alongside Burnett will be disclosed at an official launch.
