Chess players, mainly regulars involved in Georgetown tournaments demonstrated their experience over the board and dominated the results of the MALTA SUPREME one-day Rapid Chess tournament in Linden last Sunday.
Tafari Amadi was adjudged the Best Senior Player from Linden and Jamal Adams of McKenzie High won the trophy for the Best Linden Junior. Twenty-two players travelled to the mining town for the one-day event at the Linden Constabulary Hall which saw 11 Lindeners participating.
Taffin Khan, National Senior Champion played undefeated and won the senior category outright. Georgetown players Maria Thomas and Glenford Corlette secured second and third place respectively. Veteran player David Khan captured the fourth position.
Saeed Ali of Georgetown won the junior category with no losses but drew his matches with National Junior Champion Hai Feng Su and second place junior Raan Motilall. Hai Feng Su secured third, but dropped one game to Roberto Neto who copped fourth place. Sheriffa Ali won the medal for the Best Female and Anthony Sugrim was the Best Under 13 player.
The points standings for the seniors in the seven round event read: Taffin Khan seven points, Maria Thomas, Glenford Corlette and David Khan five apiece while Tafari Amadi, Irshad Mohammad and Malcolm Archer scored four each. Winslow Parris, Ulric Harmon, Benjamin Mc Bean and lone female of Linden Ashanti Richmond accumulated three points apiece. Jaikeshan Takchandra and Ronald Reid followed behind with less.
Among the juniors, the standings read: Saeed Ali six points, Raan Motilall five and a half, Hai Feng Su and Roberto Neto five apiece. Trenton Bennet and Ron Motilall scored four and a half points each. Fifteen other junior players amassed four points each or under.
The tournament was sponsored exclusively by BANKS DIH under the MALTA SUPREME brand. Shiv Nandalall, President of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) expressed gratitude to Banks DIH for its sponsorship and especially for making the GCF’s presence in Linden possible.
