Sales and Marketing Executive of Banks DIH Carlton Joao speaking at the launching of this year’s ‘Guinness Greatest of the Streets’ Knockout Futsal Football Tournament yesterday expressed on behalf of the Company its joy in being back in the Linden community to host the event.
Joao, who along with Branch Manager for Linden Shaundell Easton, Chief Organiser of the Tournament Caeron Sealey, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart, Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste and Company PRO Troy Peters shared the Head Table, during the proceedings which was held at the Egbert Benjamin Exhibition & Convention Centre in Mackenzie, said it was indeed fantastic to be back in Linden to sponsor the tournament which he described as a huge success last year.
The Marketing Executive in reflecting on the tournament and where it has gone since its conception revealed that there were a lot of naysayers at the time when they thought about brining the event to the Linden community, but added that they’ve been proven wrong judging from the returns that were garnered at the inaugural tournament.
“I would like to say that in many instances it went as good as or even better than many places that the tournament was conducted in Georgetown so the overwhelming evidence is there to prove that those who felt that would be a waste of time were wrong,” Joao stated.
He spoke of the economic spin offs that the community benefit from, describing it as fantastic, adding that the Company is extremely pleased with the support received from the community so far.
Joao pointed out that another positive from hosting the tournament is the fact that at every level whether it is the entertainment area, security or any other component related to the tournament, the personnel involved comes from the community.
He then gave a brief insight on how much the tournament has evolved since its conception in 2009, informing that the idea was born right here in Guyana and has now taken on regional and international dimensions with a Caribbean segment scheduled to be staged right here in Guyana in mid year.
Joao closed by thanking everyone within their respective communities who’ve supported the tournament and by extension the Company.
Sealey in his remarks gave an overview of the tournament, disclosing the rules under which it will be run and implored on all members of the community be it fans, players and officials to be on their best behaviour throughout the event so that it will guarantee the event’s stay in the community.
He promised a strong presence of security to ensure that fans, the business persons, officials and players are all safe throughout the competition.
The official also highlighted the importance of staging the tournament during the Linden Town Week activities which he said provides exciting entertainment for the residents and visitors and also serves to foster camaraderie between the various sections of the community, while allowing the visitors the opportunity to revive old friendships as well.
The tournament runs from April 1 to May 5 and will be played at different venues.
The winning team will receive $500,000, runner-up- $250,000, 3rd place-$150,000 and 4th place-$100,000. Prizes will also be given to the most outstanding players in addition there will be giveaways for fans.
