Imran Khan
adjudged ‘Boxer of the Night’ in a specially organized tournament in Trinidad and Tobago dubbed ‘Trinidad and Tobago Olympic box off preparation tournament,’ Wednesday evening last.
Khan defeated Shakin Garcia to solidify the confidence placed in him to procure a medal at the imminent London Olympics in Great Britain later this year. In all, the Guyanese contingent chalked up several impressive wins of the four fights on the opening night. Those in winners’ row are Stefan Gouveia against Akil Thomas and Ian Bancroft against Lavel Nurse.
Richard Williamson, who had earlier defeated Lawrence Singh, dropped a decision to the American of Trinidadian and Guyanese parentage. The victory was somewhat compensatory for Singh who had also surrendered a points decision to ‘Magic’ Khan.
The three other local fighters, Markember Pierre, Laured Stewart and Keeve Allicock were to have fought last night to bring the curtains down on the tournament.
Khan is expected to do Guyana proud in the 2012 London Olympics after the executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association had invested a huge amount of funds towards his preparations. He has fought in Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados among other countries and recently returned from Cardiff Wales where he had undergone a short stint under the tutelage of several highly qualified AIBA coaches.
Upon his return to Guyana he had intimated that the sojourn had been of great value and he was confident that his repertoire of knowledge had been enhanced.
