Dear Editor,
I am forced once again to write to you about poorly written articles that misrepresent the true picture. I have often said that proper investigative reporting must be done. The Child Care & Protection Agency has been much opened to the media because we feel that the public needs to be aware of the work we do and of the plight of children who suffer abuse and the Media has a role to play in raising the level of awareness of child abuse.
However, from time to time there are gross inaccuracies and omissions in the articles. Take for instance the article on the missing teen in the Sunday, March 18, 2012 KN.
The Harauni Home for girls is a privately run institution and not directly managed by the Ministry of Labour, Human Services & Social Security but we at the Child Care Agency do monitor the operations and in fact there are Minimum Standards of Operations for such institutions.
We also do the gate keeping — meaning that a child is admitted only on recommendation of the Agency. There is also a procedure for the reporting of “missing children “— children who leave formal care on their own volition.
The Administrators and Managers have to report to the Agency immediately any such eventuality. In the article it is stated that I said I visited the home and I did not know that the child was missing. That is not true I did not visit the Home. What was said is that officers visited to take a child but were not given the report of the missing child. However, a call was subsequently made to the Agency to report the child’s absence from the Home. Ann Greene Director of Children Services
