Mashramani Cavalcade of Sports successfully held in Berbice
A number of events were staged while a few were aborted due to bad light when the New Amsterdam Mashramani/Republic Anniversary Committee in collaboration with the Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam staged a one day Cavalcade of sports in celebration of Mashramani in the New Amsterdam Berbice area.
The one day activity which was held at the New Amsterdam Stelling Road (Matthew Allen Road) in New Amsterdam saw competition in Three on Three basketball, Two on two Volleyball, Four on four Netball, and three man team Dominoes. The Road Tennis was aborted at the final stage while the football competition was not played due to the unavailability of light.
The Volleyball competitions which was played on a Two on Two basis was played in three categories, male, female and Mixed. The respective winners were Quincy Matheson and Neil Lallbeharry. The female category was won by the pair of Tamela Felix and Kathleen Victor, while the mixed pair winners were Paul Azar and Sherry Lewis.
The Netball competition was taken by Warriors Netball Club with victory over Swagga Boss seven goals to five.
Dream Team won the Basketball competition with a 4-3 victory over Rockers. In the dominoes competition Prince won from Coach Pub and Dove.
The Road Tennis competition reached the final stage before it stopped with Shaver Henry and Kyle Kamalsarran being the finalists. However, according to coordinator of the Tennis competition, Carol Humphrey, the finals will be played at a later date. Cash and trophies were presented to the various winners.
Teams were drawn from most of the different wards in New Amsterdam, East and West Canje, Corentyne and East Bank Berbice.
Among the sponsors were Ansa Mc AL Guyana Limited, Trophy Stall of Bourda Market, Stretch the Dollar Supermarkets, Gordon Boutique, A. Ally and Sons and Alphonso and family among others.
The week of activities continued on Thursday with a grand costume and street parade through the streets of New Amsterdam and will culminate with a Fashion show and Pageant on Saturday 25th on the Lawns of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute.
Music will be supplied by Shocking Vibes. The committee is headed by Former Mayor and dynamic Berbice businessman Errol Alphonso who has the distinction of successfully organizing the town’s first town day.
