Optimism high for Guyana’s Olympic hopeful
Guyana’s chances of procuring that coveted Olympic gold medal will
be heightened following the departure of its identified representative at the imminent 2012 London Olympics, Imran Khan, to Cardiff Wales this morning.
Khan will join several other elite fighters for a three weeks stint conducted by several handpicked International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) trainers from around the world.
Yesterday morning Khan paid a courtesy call to Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Frank Anthony and the Minister took the opportunity to wish him well on his mission. Khan was accompanied by his dad, Shazaol, his trainer, James Walcott and President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Steve Ninvalle.
Mr. Anthony said that he is pleased with the opportunity opened for Khan and he urged the young pugilist to utilize it to the maximum. The Minister said that Khan has demonstrated the propensities of a top boxer and he (Minister) hoped that the boxer could transfer his efforts to the international arena.
Further, it was revealed that a team of journalists from the United Kingdom would be engaged in activities that would chronicle the happenings of Khan for international consumption. “Guyana stands to benefit from such international publicity which is a positive spinoff of Khan’s activities,” noted Mr. Anthony.
He also revealed that he and Mr. Ninvalle had recently visited the Andrew ‘Sixheads’ Lewis boxing gym to conduct an evaluation in preparation of a full time programme for young pugilists. The details of this initiative are forthcoming.
Meanwhile, Khan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve his country and promised to be a very good ambassador. He assured that he is focused and prepared to soak up as much knowledge so that he could be fully prepared for national duties at the impending tournament.
