Dear Sir,
I, Michael Persaud was driving motor car HB-8898 on 28th January last and as I was approaching the Weldaad Police Station, at around 16:30 hours, I was stopped by a police traffic rank officer.
The rank had a red stripe attach to his white sleeve and I assume he is a Corporal of police. He approached me and ask me for my driver’s licence which I gave to him. He had no name or number on his uniform to identify himself.
He then asked me to show him my certificate of insurance, which I did.
He then went to the front windshield and checked my Road Service and Fitness and came back to me that I need to display my original fitness and not a photocopy.
I said to him that I always display the photocopy because the original tends to fade out after a while.
The rank told me that he had to give me a ticket and went into the station with my licence before returning a few minutes later with the ticket.
I read the ticket which had a tick to the offence which stated that I failed to display my fitness.
We exchanged a few words with me challenging the correctness of the charge to which he responded that I can tell that to the magistrate.
As I drove a little further I saw two other traffic ranks who both had their names and number on their uniform and I showed them the ticket and they said I was being charged for not displaying my fitness on my windshield.
But when I showed them that my fitness was being displayed, they advised me to go to court and plead not guilty and explain my situation to the magistrate.
I live in Georgetown and it will cost me more than five thousand dollars to the court and back to Georgetown.
I also would like to know if it is not an offence to have on a uniform without a name and number so as to identify an ORIGNAL POLICE OFFICER. Thank you for your kind cooperation. Michael Persaud
