Two bandits turned a section of Mon Repos on the East Coast of Demerara into a semi war zone, when they fired off several rounds as they made good their escape after robbing the Mangal and Sons General Store.
The men escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash after inflicting a brutal beating on Rajendra Mangal, the owner of the business, who eventually had to seek medical attention at the Georgetown Hospital last evening.
The men, who were both carrying guns, struck around 19:40 hours attacking Mangal, his wife Lynette and their son Avinash.
A shaken Avinash Mangal told this newspaper that he and his mother were sitting in the store which is located on Melsha Road, when the two men entered.
One of them with a handgun went straight to his mother and grabbed her, demanding money and jewellery, while the other who was carrying what appeared to be a rifle confronted his father with the same demand.
According to the young man, his mother begged the bandit who was holding her not to kill anyone. But the other bandit was busy beating the business owner about his body.
Two other family friends, who were in the gym at the back of the business, heard the commotion and managed to hide while the mayhem was taking place.
Avinash said that one of the bandits hit him in his head and when he fell, he was grabbed by his shirt and held at gunpoint. He said that one of the bandits went into a drawer in the business place and grabbed all the cash which represented the entire day’s sales.
The other bandit forced Rajendra Mangal into another section of the building where more cash was handed over. By this time neighbours heard the screams of Lynette Mangal and began converging on the scene.
The bandits sensing that they were about to be confronted ran out of the business place discharging rounds to ward off the neighbours.
Rajendra Mangal was subsequently taken to the hospital where he was treated and sent away.
The police were summoned but up to late last night no one had been arrested.
The family has been in business for 17 years and although they experienced several burglary attempts, this was the first time that they actually came face to face with bandits. “I’m really shaken and still in disbelief,” said Avinash Mangal.
