Increased cooperation & networking vital to future
The new Executive of the Guyana Amateur Body Building & Fitness Federation (GABBFF) has embarked on a series of visits to clubs nationwide aimed at increasing cooperation and networking between the gyms and the local parent body of the sport.
The visits which commenced in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden, an area that has produced some of the best bodies to ever grace the stage in Guyana and the Caribbean, is seen as “the key to stimulating more enthusiasm from current and future athletes who wish to take part in the events throughout this year and going forward,” according to the GABBFF.
While in Linden, Executive Members visited the upper Demerara Barbell Club as well as a Private Gym owned by local bodybuilder and former Mr. Guyana and inaugural winner of the Mr. Hugh Ross Classic, Mark ‘Uno’ Perry.
Some of the Executive members including current Powerlifting King Randolph ‘The Accomplisher’ Morgan took the opportunity to showcase their ability by indulging in a spirited workout with Perry, Colin ‘Mr. Clean’ Chesney and current Powerlifting Queen of the Caribbean, Commonwealth and North America, Dawn ‘The Cool Destroyer’ Barker, among others. Reigning Mr. Guyana, Clint Duke was also in attendance.
It was felt that with the presence of such amazing athletes in the Bauxite Mining Town, many more success stories can come out of Linden with the current crop of high achievers serving as motivators for fledgling athletes. The GABBFF representatives also met with Seven-Time Mr. Guyana, Lindy Sharpe.
Summing up the Linden visit was Treasurer, Jamie Mc Donald: “We gathered from our meetings that the Linden area has felt somewhat marginalized in recent years with regards to dissemination of information relating to the sport, its events and initiatives. We have promised to keep them up to speed in this regard going forward and have briefed them on our plans for the year as well as our more immediate plans for the upcoming Novices and Intermediate competitions.”
On Wednesday last, four Gyms along the East Coast were targeted including Pro Fitness, Powerhouse, Raw Power and another which has no name as yet. Commitments were given by some of the athletes affiliated to these Gyms that they will be competing at the upcoming Novices competition.
All the Gym Owners/Managers were appreciative of the visit which the GABBFF believes has set the tone for greater things this year.
Following up on the Linden and East Coast visits, Gyms on the West Coast of Demerara and the East Bank were in focus on Friday last. Those included Interline Fitness which has locations in both areas. Both Gym Managers were appreciative of the interaction with the federation.
Extreme Fitness Gym located in the G3 building and Total Fitness Gym (Grove) were also targeted. At the foregoing locations, the federation had a firsthand view of some of the athletes who are already in preparation for the Novices competition.
The Ancient County of Berbice came into focus on Sunday where visits were made to Windaroju Gym, Tejmohol, Crushers Barbell and two Private Gyms.
Like the other areas, Berbice will be represented at the Novices competition. Summing up the Berbice leg of visits, the GABBFF believes that potentially, Berbice has a lot of promise and talented athletes but communication challenges have been responsible for many of the athletes turning their focus and efforts to Powerlifting.
The GABBFF says that since there is a very strong linkage between the two disciplines, they are hoping to have some overlap along with a renewed commitment from the federation to show more support to this region.
In order to improve communication generally, the new GABBFF ensured that their contact information was given to the various gyms which they met. Also, entry forms for Novices, which will be held at the Theatre Guild on March 31st 2012, were distributed.
Additionally, a number of persons were identified to be the representatives from the various areas; Ms Shelly Barker and Mr. Lindy Sharpe (Linden), Steve Sooklall (Berbice) and Oswyn Jones (West Demerara).
The gyms were promised that copies of videos of previous Novices competitions will be distributed to them with a view of the athletes and possible participants getting an idea of what is expected at this level of competition.
