Carnage on the streets

Dear Editor,
One month has passed since Patrice Welcome was mowed down on Aubrey Barker Street, South Ruimveldt. Since then, many other commuters and pedestrians have shared the same fate.
There is no indication that anything is being done to curb the slaughter on our highly congested roadways. Courtesy and care have been replaced with rudeness and speed. It is the Christmas season and many persons pin the festive corsage to the lapel or the front of their blouses or shirts.
Mr. Welcome and other loved ones that Patrice had left behind, wear pictures in memory of his passing.
While the politicians tackle the corruption in our society, we call upon our law enforcement officers to rid our streets of repeat traffic offenders. These persons have no respect for the laws or for the officers who patrol the streets. The minibus drivers believe that it is the music that attracts passengers. Start charging them for noise nuisance and obscene lyrics, then remove all musical instruments.
Only then will they truly understand that we want to get from point A to point B, without being tormented.
In many cases the tempo and lyrics of the song dictate the mood and speed of the driver. My apologies go out to the law abiding and careful drivers, but they are too few of you for us to ignore the general situation. All drivers should be checked for alcohol or drug use before they enter or leave the park. Their vehicles should also be checked for illegal and filthy CDs.
Mr. Commander, please give command to those in charge to implement the laws that were written for the safety of all Guyanese.
Let us remember Patrice and all the others who have lost their lives, leaving their loved ones in a painfully depressing state, even during this auspicious season. We thank God for the time he allowed us to have Patrice, and believe that he will avenge his death.
