As the positive diagnosis of HIV and AIDS becomes vast, the initiative was taken by the Ministry of Health to introduce the Home Base Care (HBC) system which will ensure that persons can live at home instead of in a Hospital and still be treated effectively.
It was recorded that as of last year approximately 918 new persons were enrolled into the HBC programme with 457 at the treatment sites and 461 NGO’s.
The percentage of persons accessing the services through the NGO has increase from 43.3 per cent in 2009 to 50.2 per cent in 2010.
More males utilize the services at the treatment sites than the NG0’s while more females opt to visiting the NGOs, through which a total of 1,378 OVC received care and support under the programme.
Precisely 22 outlets provided HBC services; these include two private hospitals, namely, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and the Davis Memorial Hospital, nine NGOs and 11 treatment sites.
It was revealed that the Catholic Relief Services came on board with this initiative within the last quarter of 2010 adding to the NGO complement.
A total 182 health care providers were trained during this year in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the service rendered at the various sites.
