Pace setter, Raymond Newton rode away with two events at the Max and Marlis Perriera Memorial Cycle Race competition in the National Park yesterday afternoon including the feature event.
The U-50 rider, who displayed speed and stamina, out pedaled Robin Persaud and Marlon Williams in the Open men’s 30 laps race in a time of 1:04:48.6 seconds to take the top podium spot in the featured event of the day.
Newton had also won the Veterans U-50 five laps race ahead of Ian Jackson and Junior Niles who had a slight collision around the 200 meters area.
An exciting race known as the ‘Unknown Distance’ was a part of the agenda of the cycle meet. The event which does not have a fixed distance at the start of race saw Paul DeNobreiga, Raynauth Jeffery and Gordon Sampson battling against each other when the final lap was indicated by the bell. The bell which sent an electrifying sensation through the three energized riders saw DeNobreiga outclassing his rivals at an early stage in the race, leaving the two to settle for second (Jeffery) and third (Sampson).
Jeffery, who came second in the ‘Unknown Distance’, returned in the junior 12-14 yrs 10 laps race to unleash his steam on Donavan Bissoon (second) and Kurt La Rose (third).
Montgomery Parris had an easy win in the Over-50 category as he distanced himself from his opponents on the fourth lap (final lap) of the race. Anthony Faria finished second with Harry Lall third.
Young and vigorous Jumal Arthur sprinted away with the BMX 6-9 years one lap race; Denzil Huntley came second as Philbert Walters was third.
Deeraj Gharbaran won the boys 9-12 BMX 2 laps ahead of the Julian Ming who edged out Jonick La Rose a few inches before the finishing line. Jormel Yearwood came out victorious in the open BMX 3 laps race, while Jude Bentley won the Upright and Mountain Bike 10 lap race.
The open points race was won by Orville Hinds.
