A chartered aircraft yesterday crash-landed during bad weather at the Arau airstrip, Region Seven, but there are no reported injuries.
The Cessna 206 belonging to Air Services Limited (ASL) was at the time carrying four officials attached to the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
According to ASL’s Flight Operations, Annette Arjoon-Martins, the flight was scheduled to leave since Tuesday but was canceled because of bad weather.
The incident was said to have taken place shortly after 09:00 hrs yesterday.
The ASL official said that the pilot had received favourable weather reports from Arau yesterday morning and the flight left Ogle at 08:00 hours.
However, it rained in Region Seven for a short while and one villager said that the aircraft, upon landing, hit water on the runway and flipped over.
“I can tell you that no one was injured and we flew the passengers back to Ogle this (yesterday) afternoon,” Arjoon-Martins told Kaieteur News.
Officials from the Guyana civil aviation authority are said to be continuing their investigations into the crash.
The Arau airstrip, Arjoon-Martins believes, is among the top five most dangerous airstrips to land on.
“This is an airstrip around 800 feet long of mostly sand. Captain Khan is a very experienced pilot who has been flying to that area for years now.”
One person, who is familiar with Arau, said that the airstrip is made up of sand and serves as a critical link to that Region Seven area.
“We depend on this airstrip and without it critical supplies can’t come. we would love to see some upgrade,” the villager said.
