Overseas-based golfer Roger Rajkumar, who returned to Guyana recently to participate in the Digicel Classic and Guyana Open speaking with the media, said he believes that the absence of an 18-hole Golf Course is a serious oversight when one considers the growing popularity the sport has been enjoying currently.
Rajkumar, who resides in Canada, made the comments during the launching of the Guyana Open Tournament which was conducted in the Boardroom at Banks DIH Thirst Park on Wednesday.

He said that the plea for a more advanced facility that could garner enormous benefits for the sport and by extension the country had been made long ago, but for reasons unknown has not materialised.
“It has to be an oversight, especially with the sport growing at a fast rate, it could help contribute to charity and the society at large,” Rajkumar told a section of the media.
He felt that the sport has not enjoyed the kind of support that is needed to take it to the next level here and called on those with the responsibility for sport to put some focus on its development since the spinoffs could benefit Guyana in the long run through sports tourism, increase sponsorship and investment.
Rajkumar, a native of this country, before he left to reside overseas during his remarks sought to debunk the myth of the sport being played only by persons of a certain class in the society, informing that it has evolved to the level where persons from all classes are now getting involved in the sport.
He spoke of how much they (overseas-based players) look forward to returning during this period to participate in the annual event which he referred to as a sort of pilgrimage to them.
Meanwhile, Rajkumar, who captured the Digicel Classic that was played over the past weekend, said that he feels confident, while his driving and putting has been consistent and come Sunday he should be there at the end fighting for the title.
