Guyana, led by a resilient 45 from Captain Assad Fududin, 38 from West Indies player Chris Barnwell and a
Steven Jacobs four-wicket haul defeated the Windward Islands by 103 runs in a truncated match when the curtains went up on the Regional Super50 cricket tournament at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday.
Windward captain, Devon Smith called correctly and in murky conditions after overnight showers invited the hosts to take first strike. His strategy appeared justified when Nelon Pascal lured Trevon Griffith (10) to hit a catch to Dennis George with the score on 15-1.
Leon Johnson then joined Fudadin and together they took the score to 62 before Johnson was caught and bowled by Garey Mathurin for 19. Travis Dowlin and Fudadin added another 30 before Mathurin struck again when Fudadin was leg before with the score on 92-3 after hitting three fours.
Royston Crandon was the next to go, LBW to George for 15 while Jonathan Foo (1) was sent back by Pascal to start a mini collapse in the middle of the innings at 124-5. Ten runs later, Dowlin (31) departed after lashing Mathurin into the hands of Hyron Shallow at 134-6 and four runs later, Shallow took another catch off Pascal to send back Derwin Christian at 138-7.
It was 156-8 in the 45th over when Steve Jacobs (9) fell to Liam Sebastian and when Paul Wintz (1) was run out, the Guyanese were in deep trouble at 157-9.
However, debutant Steven Latcha was content to play the supporting role to Barnwell who farmed the strike and contributed a valuable 38 that included 2 fours and a lofty six. With the total tantalizingly close to the 200-run mark, Barnwell went for a big hit and was bowled by Pascal to leave the visitors needing 192 to win the match.
Pascal who was the pick of the bowlers with 4-38 from nine overs received support from Mathurin who had 3-38 from 12 overs. Heavy showers on the stroke of lunch delayed play and upon resumption the umpires shaved off 10 overs and a revised victory target of 176 from 40 overs was set.
The Guyanese struck in the second over when wicket-keeper Christian threw down the stumps with Johnson Charles out of his crease off Wintz’ bowling with the score on one. Jacobs, who opened the bowling to exploit Smith’s weakness to off-spin, soon removed the left-hander for two before getting rid of Fletcher LBW for three.
Wintz returned to dismiss Keddy Lesporis for three in the 6th over and also had Sebastian (1) leg before while Jacobs struck again by dismissing Craig Emmanuel with the score on 29-6.
Thereafter, it was a steady procession to the pavilion with Mathurin losing his off stump to Jacobs (42-7) and Dennis George being run out for 14. Hyron Shallow was caught off Barnwell at 42-8 while Kenroy Peters was caught behind to give Latcha his first wicket at this level at 59-9.
George (18) was then run out from a direct hit from Foo to give the Guyanese victory and four points to take an early lead in the competition. Jacobs had 4-21 from 10 overs, Wintz 3-15 from five, Barnwell 1-22 from six and Latcha 1-14 from 2.5 for the hosts who play HPC at Providence tomorrow in their next match. (Michael Benjamin)
