A large gathering of golfers that included those based overseas converged in the Boardroom at Banks DIH, Thirst Park yesterday not only to attend the launching of the most prestigious tournament played locally, but to signal the significance of the event.
Sponsored under the R1 Vodka brand, the occasion had in attendance Sales & Marketing Executive Carlton Joao, RI Brand Manager Dwain Bristol, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart, Brand Manager Ian DeBarros, Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) President Brian Hackett, PRO Troy Peters, defending Ladies champion Christine Sukhram, recently crowned Digicel champion Roger Rajkumar of Canada, USA-based Mo Shaffie and William Walker among others.
Hackett speaking on behalf of the club spoke of the existing relationship with Banks DIH which he referred to as enjoyable and fruitful, adding that the Company has sponsored the tournament for quite a few years now and the club is extremely satisfied with the association.
The LGC President then gave a synopsis of the tournament which he said will be played in four flights ranging from 0-9, 10-18, 19-28 and in the case of the women 0-36.
According to Hackett it allows for parity among the players with those of lesser ability being able to compete with the established players and having a similar chance to win the tournament.
Hackett informed that players from Suriname, USA, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago have all signalled their intentions to participate in the competition and he is expecting a fantastic two days of fierce rivalry, while urging the fans to come out and witness the spectacle.
He thanks the Company first for its continued support for the event and more importantly the sport.
Joao in his remarks first welcomed all members of the fraternity present, adding that as a sponsor it is comforting and motivating to see the field increasing every year.
He paid special tribute to the overseas-based players whose presence every year has made the tournament special and said that their turnout is somewhat of a pilgrimage where every one of them looks forward to attending.
He extended best wishes to defending champions Avinash Persaud and Christine Sukhram.
Joao just before closing revealed the names of Banks DIH staffers who will be participating and they include Chairman Clifford Reis, Mark Lashley and Gavin Todd.
Shaffie commenting on behalf of golfers from the USA said that they are all proud to be here once again, exuding confidence in the ability of the foreigners.
“I am saying here today, the locals will have to earn that victory if they are to get past us,” Shaffie stated.
He congratulated the club for a job well done in being able to keep the Open at such a high standard and also being able to keep Banks DIH on board.
Rajkumar in his remarks spoke of the pride and passion they have when they arrive back home something he disclosed he’s been doing for the past ten years. He credited Banks DIH and the club for developing the tournament into what it is today, the symbol of local golf.
Rajkumar said he expects the tournament to be very competitive, but also expects to win, adding that his form is good and his confidence high.
Prizes will be given out to the respective winners following the completion of the tournament this Saturday and Sunday.
Tee off time is 06:30 hrs and over 70 golfers are listed to participate in the competition.
