Driver placed on $200,000 bail for D’Urban Street death
A driver was on Tuesday asked to post bail in the sum of $200,000 for causing death by dangerous driving.
Nola Hohenkirk appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate Court to answer a charge that on July 17 2011, she caused the death of a 62-year-old pensioner, Eustace Rodriquez, by driving her vehicle dangerously.
Hohenkirk who entered a plea of not guilty was accused of hitting Rodriquez who was at the time riding his pedal cycle. The prosecutor, Sergeant Lionel Harvey, stated that on the day in question, along D’Urban and John Streets, the defendant drove motor car HB 9588 in a manner that was dangerous to the public.
He continued that the woman struck down Rodriquez. Prosecutor Harvey told the court that the man sustained multiple injuries and was subsequently taken to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries the following day. An investigation was carried out by the police and the woman was then arrested and charged.
According to the dead man’s family, Rodriquez was heading to the market to purchase some items. Hohenkirk is expected to make her next court appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate Court on October 1.
