Johnson, Mohamed spur Demerara to victory as E’bo lose by 58 runs

Skipper Leon Johnson led from the front with a classy 67 and off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed completed the job with 5-28 as Demerara whipped Essequibo by 58 runs at Bourda yesterday to join Berbice at the top of the points table of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) El Dorado 50-over cricket competition after the opening round.

After a flying start from Trevon Griffith (36) and Shemroy Barrington (38) who provided an 86-run start from 16 overs, the left-handed Johnson stroked two fours and a magnificent extra-cover driven six off left-arm spinner Anthony Adams in his 88-ball 67 as Demerara reached 234-8 off 50 overs on a perfect pitch and fast outfield.
Mohamed who bowled 12 overs got good support from pacer Paul Wintz (2-30) as Essequibo slumped to another familiar defeat after most of their batsmen threw their wickets away with impetuous shots as they were all out for 176 in 42 overs despite an attractive 52 from Former National youth opener Norman Fredericks.
Norman Fredericks reached the boundary six times in his 66-ball 52 and along with the aggressive national under-19 opener Kevin Boodie (29), added 50 in nine overs before Boodie, who was especially severe on National t20 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll, was caught behind off Wintz.
After Yogeshwar Lall (5) ran himself out in a mix-up with Fredericks at 61-3, Norwayne Fredericks joined his brother to take Essequibo to 108 before Norman, who played some delightful drives, skied a catch to mid-off and without addition to the score Norwayne (16) fell in similar fashion to Kellon Carmichael and Essequibo never recovered despite a breezy 22 from last man Kevin Gordon, who dumped Wintz for a six over cover an another six back over his head in the same over before he was leg before to Mohamed to end the game.

Harrell Greene (14) and Ricardo Adams (10) were the other batsmen to reach double figures for Essequibo, who have never beaten Demerara since their success at Bourda 31 years ago.
Earlier Griffith and Barrington were having things their own way despite impressive bowling for West Indies under-19 pacer Ronsford Beaton before Barrington lofted left-arm spinner Lall to long-on to end the entertaining opening partnership.
Griffith, dropped twice at slip by Lall in Adams’ first over, edged a cut at the spinner in his next over and was caught behind, while Gajanand Singh edged Adams to slip first ball, as Demerara slipped to 86-3.
Johnson and fellow GCC left-hander Vishal Singh added 77 for their fourth wicket before Singh was leg before to Fredericks at 163-4, although Essequibo never allowed the home team batsmen to really cut loose and Johnson skied a cleverly delivered slower ball from Beaton in the closing stages of the innings.
Adams had 3-47 from 12 overs and Beaton 2-48 from 10 for Essequibo who face the President’s X1 at DCC in today’s second round.
