-woman’s family upset by reports
Police detained but subsequently released the young woman who was with University of Guyana student, Yiu Ting-A-Kee, when he was slain by gunmen during the early hours of Friday.
Kaieteur News confirmed that the 21-year-old woman, who also attends UG, was taken into custody at the East La Penitence Police Station on Sunday night after police ranks visited her home. She was released yesterday evening.
The woman’s relatives said that they were shocked at her arrest and are also upset about recent media reports which appear to paint the student in a negative light.
According to the relative, the young woman is still traumatized after witnessing the brutal murder of her friend.
“Imagine someone who is traumatized and they have to go through this. She is still grieving.”
Recalling the woman’s emotional state after the shooting, the relative stated that she “was crying uncontrollably and was scared.”
Asked if there was a possible motive other than robbery, the relative suggested that the men might have been ‘amateurs’ who panicked and shot Ting-A-Kee while attempting to rob him.
The woman’s arrest came days after the victim’s father, George Ting-A-Kee, had expressed suspicion about the statements she had made regarding his son’s death. Mr. Ting-A-Kee has repeatedly said that he is not convinced that the men who killed his son were bandits.
According to him, his son never wore gold jewellery while going out. He added that there was money in his son’s wallet when police recovered it in his car. According to him, the vehicle itself was also intact when ranks recovered it.
He added that contrary to some reports, his son and the young woman he was with were sitting in the passenger side of the car, and not on the seawalls.
“I heard her (the young woman) say that they (the bandits) jumped over the wall and demanded money and cell phones, (but) it doesn’t appear as if her cell phone was stolen. She was not touched; she was not slapped. She said that he pushed her behind him to protect her. There are too many things that don’t mesh.”
Mr. Ting-A –Kee says that he is also puzzled that there was just a small spot of blood at the murder scene, even thought his son was shot in the chest and left leg.
The distraught man told Kaieteur News that he was informed that the young woman was scheduled to be married soon, but was still seeing his son.
Mr. Ting-A-Kee alleged that he had been concerned about his son, and had even warned the youth that persons might try to harm him.
The young woman who witnessed the shooting has declined to speak to this newspaper despite repeated requests.
According to reports, Ting-A-Kee and his friend were sitting in the car near the Bel Air seawall just after midnight on Friday when two men attacked them.
It is alleged that one of the men shot the student in the chest and leg and fled with his accomplice in the wounded man’s car after relieving the victim of his valuables.
Mr. Ting-A-Kee said that his son was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The car was recovered in Lamaha Park later that afternoon. Six .38 rounds were found at the scene of the shooting.
And in a press release, the University of Guyana Student’s Society expressed shock at Ting-A-Kee’s death “at the hands of malicious criminals with no value for a human life.”
“We the students and staff of the University of Guyana take this opportunity to condemn this act and we call on the Guyana Police Force and Government of Guyana to bring to swift justice the criminals who brought our colleague’s life to a tragic end.”
They extended condolences to the Ting-A-Kee family while disclosing that they will hold an official candlelight vigil in their colleague’s memory between 18:00 hrs to 19:30 hrs today on the University of Guyana Tarmac.
