Dear Editor,
I am not aware if Joey Jagan resides in Guyana or not, but he must first look at the sufferings of animals on the streets of Guyana, especially man’s best friend, the dog, even if they are domestic ones, which are chained up and taunted by children and even grown ups.
I recalled reading a man had his sheep killed by some dogs and went on a rampage with a cutlass and killed domestic chained up dogs of local residents. This was so sickening.
Tourists and overseas based Guyanese visiting especially with their young children are very upset and traumatised to see the state of these animals having lived in countries where animals are protected by the law, something which Guyana is lacking.
Even dead animals are left on the roads to swell in the sun while others are being run over by vehicles going backwards and forwards with no one to drag the carcass to the verge of the roads and contact the authorities to discard of it. So Joey, leave the animals in the rainforest to avoid these sufferings in a zoo as those on the streets are suffering enough.
Children in Guyana can learn by looking at DVDs, etc., of expeditions to Guyana and see the beautiful animals, many of which rare are species, in their natural habitat.
Firstly, the children of Guyana must be taught at a young age in schools and in the home, to respect street and domestic animals of all kinds which they see in their everyday lives and perhaps, I repeat perhaps, when they grow up, some may one day get involved and create a beautiful and well kept zoo where the animals look happy and well looked after, not only for the children of Guyana to see, but the many overseas visitors and their children.
