It is not only that Guyana has to endure the misery of life under the PPP, but the misery in the asininity of some of its leaders.
I have been in the newspaper business a long time and still I would not understand how the Stabroek News (SN) operates. The SN took a statement from an unashamed propagandist from the Office of the President, Prem Misir, and made it its headline story for August 9.
Once a person is an official propagandist for a government, the editor has to check and double check his/her statements and emanations, because you know half-truths and fiction will obfuscate facts and reality. After all, the person is propagandizing for his government. After Misir, we can expect an SN headline from Kwame Mc Coy.
As attorney Roysdale Forde once remarked to me; “Freddie, this country is jinxed.”
Everything in this country is so wrong, tragic and disappointing. How in Heaven’s name can the SN take anything Prem Misir says and make it into a lead story? And to crown it all, carry an accompanying photograph!
I have never seen the SN do that for the TUC head, Mr. Lincoln Lewis. Two weeks ago, Mr. Lewis read a statement to the press and SN was there. He wasn’t given the lead for the next day. I never saw the TUC President Norris Witter given a front page story by SN. Red Thread, the WPA, Mike Mc Cormack, Mark Benschop, Rupert Roopnaraine, among others, with their status, were never given the lead story by SN. Why Misir who commands less respect than these people in this country?
Which world does the Stabroek News live in? Prem Misir will not recognize facts even if they face him like a tsunami. The son and daughter of David de Caires recently wrote a letter in the SN asserting that a newspaper cannot submit itself to market forces. But surely a newspaper must be able to judge news and decide what is not only fit to print, but to be the lead. I hope the two de Caires come home and apply their thinking to the SN.
I ask again: which world is SN living in? Misir is not interested in the truth. Daily this man derogates the SN and Kaieteur News for unprofessional journalism and shamelessly fails to mention the newspaper that he and Kwame Mc Coy have enormous influence in and which is the most gutter-styled newspaper in the world – Guyana Chronicle. And to think that Misir can occupy a main story for one of SN’s editions!
Now let us see which truths Misir is interested in. SN has him saying that the UG’s strategic plan is faulty. But it was Misir and the PPP point man at UG, Dr. James Rose, who drafted and debated that plan and passed it in the Council of the University. I sat through all those sessions as the trade union representative. I saw how elated Misir and Rose were when the Council passed it. Suddenly, Misir finds fault with it. I told SN’s reporter, Mark Mc Gowan, about this when he called me two days ago. My comments failed to find coverage.
Misir finds “nuff” problem with UG. But again hides the PPP domination of UG. The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Rose, was a PPP candidate in the 2001 and 2006 elections. At the moment, the Council has seven card-bearing members of the PPP, including Misir. Four of them are Parliamentarians.
The four PPP Parliamentarians are the real power at UG. Ms. Gail Teixeira is the unofficial Vice Chancellor. In that SN article, Misir tells us that the British Government is cutting back on funding to universities.
Misir overlooked his own words. He didn’t emphasize the plural, “universities.” In the UK, we are talking about dozens and dozens and dozens of universities which were handsomely funded over the past eighty years. Guyana has only one university which the PPP has under-funded since it came in power and which was given massive resources by the Burnham Government. No one takes Misir seriously in Guyana except SN. But at least we should reply to his asininity, foolishness and propaganda.
Next, we read a letter by the Permanent Secretary in the Health Ministry who served for ten years as the PS in the Ministry of Education under the same Jagdeo Government. He is the Secretary of the Executive Committee of the PPP, Mr. Hydar Ally. Can God or the world save Guyana from the stupidities of these PPP leaders?
Mr. Ally wrote in SN on Aug 4 that the US has proved Karl Marx right because now in the US it is rich versus poor. In Guyana, under Mr. Ally’s party which has been in power 19 years and in which Mr. Ally is a big decision-maker, poverty is far worse than in the US. Marx is turning in his grave and wants to rise up and choke Mr. Ally and the PPP leadership.
