The oldest law enforcement service in Georgetown, the City Constabulary, will mark 174 years in existence this coming Sunday.
A number of activities have been planned to mark this significant occasion. These include a religious service, community activity and a social programme.
The Constabulary was established in July 1837 under Ordinance No. 9 1837. With over 100 employees and about five stations in Georgetown, the Constabulary is responsible for policing the 15-square mile capital city, with its approximately 180,000 citizens.
This is in addition to the 200,000 persons who visit the city on a daily basis for business, entertainment or otherwise.
The constabulary is divided into several sections including Training and Education; Enforcement; General Duties; Investigation; Enforcement; Court Processing; Administration and Operations. Its functions are to enforce compliance to the city by-laws and prosecute, when necessary, breaches of the laws of the city of Georgetown. Also, members of the Constabulary are empowered to maintain law and order and to protect citizens as they patrol the city.
The City Constabulary has the authority to deal with the stray animal nuisance and similar problems in Georgetown.
There will be a special religious service on Sunday at the Guyana Local Government Officers Union Hall, Woolford Avenue; a day of community activity next Wednesday and a feeding event for children next Friday.
