– moves into national quarter-finals
By Rawle Welch
New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) led by a six-goal effort from striker Devon James erased the lofty ambitions of Orealla Secondary when the two teams clashed in the final of the Region 6 Zone of the Digicel-sponsored Nationwide Schools Football Competition which was played on Monday, at the Scotsburg ground in Corriverton, Berbice.
James, who was in scintillating form netted in the 8th, 26th, 27th, 32nd, 40th and 47th minutes of play, while Whitney LaRose scored in the 39th minute to lift their team to an emphatic 7-1 triumph over Orealla and a place in the national quarter-final against Stewartville Secondary over at Den Amstel in Region 3.
Orealla’s lone response came off the boot of Clint Biswano, who netted in the 52nd minute.
Watched by a fair-sized crowd that included Digicel’s Customer Care Manager Sherwin Osbourne, who presented the prizes to the two teams at the end of the game, NATI clearly the fitter and bigger of the two teams, went ahead when James pounced on a long pass, before outsprinting his markers to hit a fierce right-foot shot past Orealla’s goalkeeper Berto Christmas.
Orealla though they fell behind early showed some fight, but poor finishing kept NATI in the lead.
James by this time was all over the Orealla backline creating havoc with his dribbling ability and speed and it was the utilisation of those assets that led to his second goal, reaching on to a pass from mid-field, before easing past two tackles to hammer his effort into the far corner.
He scored twice before half time to give NATI a comfortable cushion at the break as they led 4-0.
Five minutes after the resumption, Orealla defence made another lapse and LaRose ever alert to what was happening swooped on a loose ball in the 15-yard box and unleashed a ripping left-footer that screamed past a transfixed Christmas, who must have felt that his defence had let him down again.
James continued his relentless pursuit for more goals and added another to his tally one minute later.
It came from an errant back pass that found a lurking James, who evaded one tackle, before piercing Christmas with a well placed shot at the near post.
To rub salt in the wounds, James was not finished and closed off his tally with another precise run after a through ball was played into his path, eluding a host of defenders, before delivering another thunderbolt that blew past Christmas and crashed into the back of the net.
Orealla’s consolation goal came from a penalty after a NATI defender was blown for a rough tackle inside the penalty area.
Despite the difficulty to get a suitable spot to place the ball, Biswano’s violently struck effort gave goalkeeper Deron Wallerson no chance of stopping.
No more goals were scored before the final whistle sounded.
During the presentation ceremony, Orealla received medals, while NATI was handed the winning trophy, medals, sets of uniforms, goalkeeper gloves and shin pads by Osbourne.
Osbourne in brief remarks congratulated both teams for a good performance and urged the winners to exhibit a high level of discipline as they move on in the competition.
He told Orealla to stay positive despite the loss, advising them to return and prepare even better for next year’s tournament.
Meanwhile, in other results: Region 7 champions Waramadong eliminated Region 5 champions Ash Educational Institute after beating them 2-1 through a brace from Tyson McNaughton.
Port Kaituma defeated Paramakatoi 4-1 and Christianburg / Wismar beat St. Ignatius 4-1.
