When Guyanese leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo removed big guns Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni in quick succession, India were tottering on 85-6 and Bishoo’s dream of bowling to the Indian greats in his first Test against them had come true.
The 25-year-old Berbician who made his International debut in the World Cup was targeted by Harbhajan in only his third Test but after yesterday’s effort he feels he has learn a lot more about Test cricket.
Bishoo at once stage had figures of 4-2-15-3 before finishing with 3-75 from 11 overs and said it was a learning experience in his first Test in Jamaica.
“I was going well and then they attacked me…..I should have bowled a bit flatter and mixed it up a bit more but I was still looking to get wickets and I am learning from all of this,” said Bishoo who has also done in the short version of the game.
Bishoo emerged as the Man-of-the 2010 Regional T20 as he helped Guyana to qualify to represent the West Indies in last year’s T20 Champions League competition in South Africa and was one of the few success stories as Guyana struggled to win any match.
Bishoo had Sachin Tendulkar stumped when Guyana played Mumbai Indians and now has the autographed ball at his home in Doctor’s Bush, Albion.
Yesterday he added three more top players of spin to his bag of International scalps and said he could not put into words how he felt when he sliced through the Indian middle order after removed Laxman with his very first ball.
“I grew up watching the Indian batsmen like Sachin, Dravid, Laxman and Dhoni bat and I can’t put into words how I felt when I got those three wickets so quickly. All of my dreams are coming true and I am more focused than ever on working hard and improving my game and fitness to become a great West Indies spin bowler,” Bishoo said.
Bishoo also took three catches including a magnificent one when he ran from deep mid-wicket and dived full length to remove Harbhajan off Fidel Edwards to break the century partnership.
“I just said to myself when I saw the ball in the air that I had to take it….I knew if I could hold it would break that dangerous partnership and give us momentum to finish off the innings before they reached 250 and that’s what happened,” Bishoo said.
The spinner feels that while the pitch is already turn for the spinners, his team is in a good position with just one wicket down and says once the batsmen can bat well today, the West Indies could put themselves in a very good position. Today is the second day and Bishoo would be pleased that once again it seems as if the curators have prepared as pitch with generous bounce and turn for the spinners, even from the first day.
The batsmen in the home team would no doubt have a different feeling on the nature of the pitch.
