Inter-Organisation C/ship on the line
It’s on! The biggest corporate battle in basketball will occur at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Sunday when VP Sports Update in collaboration with HJTV hosts the Fourth Edition of an Inter-Organisation Basketball Championships in a huge showdown.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport briefly yesterday, Head of VP Sports Update, Vijay Panday, stated that all systems have been set for the biggest business class tournament in the four-year history of the Inter-Organisation Basketball Championships.
“Everything is in place. We are working very hard on making this the best tournament ever in the history of this tournament. We will be doing several different things to make this experience one-of-a-kind in Guyana. It will be great for the working people,” Panday said.
The Inter-Organisation Tournament was promoted last year as a ‘family fun day and dress-down’ for workers interested in sport. Panday said that the event will have a similar twist this year with HJTV and Fusion Audio bringing much more vibes to the Sports Hall.
“We will start at 10am and we have some of the best basketball-playing companies registered for this battle of the corporate giants. We have around 31 teams registered to compete, including the media,” Panday said, adding that the teams are ready to play. The media, especially, will be looking for a better showing following their final-eight appearance last year. Panday said that Neal and Massy Group of Companies is one of the teams to watch this year along with the defending champs, Guyana Power and Light.
According to the head of VP Sports Update, a strong team coming out of the US Embassy is also scheduled to compete in the tournament. He said that the team is a composition of the basketball players who work at the Embassy.
Overall, he said that the teams will have to work very hard to win the competition because it has definitely evolved into a major event. Qualfon, Scotia Bank and Republic Bank are among some of the other strong teams expected to compete for the 2011 title.
“Everybody is ready to go. I have heard that some of the teams are practicing. There are some of the biggest teams in the competition but I will not rule out the smaller teams. The word out there is that this will decide the best corporate team in basketball,” Panday said.
Digicel, Neal and Massy, Giftland OfficeMax, Lens Craft Optical and Mackeson are some of the other sponsors of the Inter-Organisation Basketball Championships. Panday said that tickets will be available at all participating companies.
