Dear Editor,
It is reassuring to finally see that decisive steps are being taken by a few opposition parties at forming a meaningful coalition to contest the next general election. What is even more appreciated is the way in which this grand coalition is to be formed, packed and presented to the Guyanese people.
It has been reported in the media that this coalition will have one symbol, name, manifesto and a presidential candidate all decided and agreed upon in consensus with all parties concerned.
I have noticed that some commentators have already started to speak derisively about some impending disaster for the PNCR because of its attempt at coalition. I am not certain where the grounds for such unfounded alarms are based, since many other political parties around the world have engaged in useful coalitions and still have maintained their identities. An example very close to home is the United National Congress (UNC) from Trinidad and Tobago, which has certainly not lost its political identity in the People’s Partnership.
The PNCR presidential candidate Mr. David Granger has already stated that the party will not be relinquishing its identity at any given point in time. And why should it?
This bold attempt at opposition political unity shows the maturity and perceptive vision of some of our politicians. The PNCR, while it bears the scars from its past which saw some very turbulent times as a result of the mistakes of its human leader Mr. L.F.S. Burnham, is today reinventing itself with vociferous steps in the direction of transparency and true democracy as it moves into Election 2011.
The door is open for other political parties to be part of this movement for change in Guyana. The time is right for our politicians in the opposition to come together and work industriously for the betterment of this nation. There are many great minds in the opposition parties that if they are united can be an indomitable force with which to reckon.
Today the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) is standing alongside the PNCR determined to work together for change. I sincerely hope that other parties see the wisdom of a unified opposition; one that openly discusses and agrees on pertinent issues that will rescue Guyana from its sorry state, and take it into a prosperous and bright future.
Richard Francois
