A unique Women’s Exposition, titled “Feminition” is to be staged from May 27 to May 29, and the Minister of Human Services and Social Security hopes will help to highlight the positive aspects of womanhood and create opportunities for vulnerable women.
“The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security while acknowledging the progress made in the status of women, recognizes that enormous strides are yet to be made in order to enhance their participation in the national development,” Manickchand’s Ministry said in a statement.
At a press conference she held yesterday, Manickchand said that the government, with the support of corporate sponsors, is meeting the expenses of women from far flung communities to showcase their products and help create market opportunities for them.
Jamaican reggae artiste Queen Ifrica is expected to perform in Guyana next week at the Women’s Expo.
The Ministry feels that “the bold and creative approach” of the Women’s Expo will help to highlight clearly defined career choices women can make, emphasize the need for healthy lifestyles, positive self-image, outlook and self esteem, create or stimulate employment ideas for some unemployed, create awareness of training and other opportunities for women and young girls and stimulate a drive for women’s entrepreneurship.
The event will place on show the skills, talents and creativity of women and aims at providing a focus on ways of improving one’s self image, enjoying a healthier lifestyle and at the same time, serving as a stimulus to both men and women in development terms.
According to Manickchand, the exposition will include a health village, where women will be able to benefit from free services, such as checks for cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes.
The Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry will be on hand to accept applications under the Women of Worth (WOW) programme, under which especially vulnerable women are given small loans without having to produce collateral.
The Ministry of Housing and Water will also host its “One Stop Shop” at the exposition, and will be accepting applications for house lots.
The 60-member strong Guyana Woman Artists Association is also on board for the event and will showcase the works of many of its members.
The event will also feature a workout area, to be managed by Buddy’s Gym.
On the entertainment side, the Women’s Expo will feature a mega fashion show and live concert featuring two international artists including Jamaica Reggae singer Queen Ifrica, who is known for her “conscious” lyrics.
The Women’s Expo will also include an awards ceremony for young business women, makeovers (health and beauty), horticulture, hair care, home decorating, knowing more about seeking professional assistance and legal aid.
“Guyanese women possess great talent, artistic skills, intelligence and abilities which once unleashed could transform lives – theirs as well as their dependents and associates. These are some of the visions of Feminition Women’s Expo 2011.”
