Local football powerhouse Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United are winding down preparations for the biggest challenge they will face to date when they take on defending Caribbean Club Champions Puerto Rico Islanders in the semifinals of the Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup on Wednesday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
The other semifinal featuring Trinidad and Tobago Club Champions Defence Force and Haiti’s Tempete FC will also be played at the Stadium as well as the final and third place encounter two days later.
Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday said his team, which have been in preparation since January, have been improving and he is pleased with the progress seen. However, Dover noted that over the next few days they will continue work on team organisation and finishing exercises, which has been a glitch in the past.
The experienced coach and former player noted that he was looking for a higher rate of conversion from his team. This is the first time in Guyana’s history that a club has reached the semifinals of the CFU Club tournament and Alpha will be taking it one game at a time, the Head Coach had earlier informed.
They will look to the talents of Captain Howard Lowe, goalkeepers Richard Reynolds, Ronson Williams, Richie Richards, Anthony Abrams, Dwight Peters, Dwayne Jacobs, Nigel Codrington, Shawn Bishop, Warren Gilkes and Kevin McKenzie among others to see them across the hurdles in their path. Several additions from overseas are also expected to be apart of the Alpha line up.
Fans are promised top level football and have been asked to come out and support the home team in their quest for glory.
