American teenager Sameer Insanali, who was the victim of a hit and run accident in Berbice which left him in a critical condition is now a patient at the Long Island Jewish Hospital, New York, United States of America (USA).
Insanali, who suffered a fractured skull (behind his left ear), swelling in his brain, blood accumulation in his head, broken hips, lacerations on his face, legs and arms, a broken tooth and internal bleeding, was taken out of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) High-Dependency Unity (HDU) after his family decided that he would be able to access better treatment and facilities in the USA.
At the time of his accident, Insanali was vacationing at #70 village, Corentyne, Berbice to spend his Easter holidays with his Guyanese based relatives.
According to his aunt, Zalina Deen, Insanali was flown out of Guyana on Thursday last, and has already received a hip operation.
The doctors at the Long Island Jewish Hospital also found clots in his brain and would be conducting other treatment and surgeries in a short time span to drain the unnecessary fluid and buildup of blood in his brain.
Deen explained that after seeing her badly injured relative off at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, she visited the Traffic Chief, Neil Semple in Georgetown to notify him of the matter, since the officers at Berbice requested that her family travel to Berbice to deal with the matter.
She questioned “Why must we go all the way up there? It wasn’t us who hit the child and sped away. It was the other person, so why should we have to go?”
Kaieteur News was told that Semple dealt with the matter speedily and the family is pleased with his intervention, which resulted in them not having to travel to Berbice.
It was also reported that the owner of the car involved is an ex-police officer of #37 Brighton Village, Corentyne, Berbice but other officers told the family that he had sold the car and could not be blamed for the accident.
Deen said one officer told her “the man sold the vehicle to someone. He ain’t got anything to do with it.”
She stated that the owner of the vehicle is responsible for whatever activity his vehicle is involved in and as such, must bear the necessary consequences that come with it.
Deen also wished to thank the doctors at the GPHC, Doctor Madan Rambarran and Chief Executive Officer of the GPHC, Michael Khan for their hard work and dedication towards Insanali while he was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
She is also extending special thanks to Brother Haseeb of the Guyana Islamic Trust (GIT) for his support and comfort during the trying days that the family had endured since Insanali was involved in the unfortunate accident.
On Easter Monday morning, Insanali was standing in the corner of the road with his bicycle at the #70 Village when a white car overtook another vehicle at a fast rate of speed and collided with him.
Because of the impact, Insanali was hurled into the air a good distance from the spot where he was standing, and landed on his head onto the road. His mother Ruksana Alladeen, who was in her relatives’ yard, heard the screech and thought that a vehicle had gotten into an accident with another vehicle on the road, and immediately turned her attention to the direction of the sound.
To her surprise she saw her teenaged son “flying in the air with his bicycle following”. Alladeen stated that the car continued its journey, failing to stop or slow down while her husband ran out of the yard and other relatives rushed to the aid of Insanali who was in an unconscious state.
