Twenty-seven year old off-spinner Dennis Squires grabbed his sixth five-wicket haul of the competition before retuning to remain unbeaten on 32 with the bat for DCC on the opening day of their Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Noble House Seafoods two-day second division semi-final at the GDF ground yesterday.
Squires, followed up his first division five wicket haul last weekend with 5-45 as GCC were dismissed for 160 by the Queenstown side who reached 125-6 by the close.
Andy Doman top scored with 35 for the Bourda boys while Gavin Charles supported with an unbeaten 26 towards the end of the innings as Squires got support from Dexter George (2-14) and Parmendra Jaigobin (2-42).
Andre Gibson fell for 38 as DCC wasted a solid foundation by losing three quick wickets before the close as 18-year-old left-arm spinner Raj Nanan took 4-39 before Squires ensured that DCC ended the day 36 runs away from first innings points with four wickets in hand going into the final day today.
In the other semi-final at DCC, 22-year-old off-spinner Azim Azeez grabbed 6-88 and got back up from fellow spinner Jonathon Alphonso (2-27) as Transport Sports Club (TSC) dismissed GDF for 189.
Twenty-four year-old Marcus Watkins who scored 87 against Everest in his only other game in the competition, stroked six fours and a six in an attractive 55 and added 86 for the first wicket with Mark Haynes who hit four fours and a six in 38 but once the openers were dismissed the Soldiers lost their way despite a fighting 42 from left-hander Ameer Khan and 24 from Berbician Terrence Madramootoo.
Charwayne McPherson made 33 as TSC reached 97-4 by the close in reply. Stephon Samson was run out for one in a mix up with McPherson with just three runs on the board but an unfinished 42-run partnership between Shafiek Ishmael (29*) and veteran Shawn Massiah steadied the ship. Left-arm spinner Clinton Collins has so far taken 2-31 for the Army. Today is the final day in both matches and the winners will clash in the final from April 30.
