Dear Editor,
Much is said about the Kaieteur News and the controversial personalities that are involved in the administration of that newspaper.
The fact of the matter is that the paper sells and this is undisputable, and the reason for their success is due to the fact that much of what passes for news is mainly sensational, wild distortions, and disparaging innuendoes but the truth is also there and this is what most of the people want. As the saying goes “no news is good news” and this principle holds true for Kaieteur- just give the people what they want- I do not blame them.
If all a newspaper prints is good news, I must say doom lies on the horizon for that print media; good news does not sell.
Adam Harris, a wily old fox knows that his newspaper is in a constituency that mainly comprises people of the opposing party hence he caters for that target group who will mop up copies like hot cakes; this is the economics of the whole affair. On the matter of being fair and balanced, Kaieteur does just that; fair yes, balanced, I will say sometimes, thus on a scale of 1 to 10 I will give them 7, which is very good after all other media houses will be rated 5.
Who said that a newspaper has to tell the truth and nothing but the truth or be a gospel storybook? That’s not the place for it. Let the readers read and they will
decide. You the editor or newspaper is to present the case and let the people decide-make no mistake they will make that distinction. Here is where Kaieteur News stands out above the rest. Take for example the Freddie Kissoon Eddie Boyer fracas. Kaieteur’s report on that incident was most welcome and entertaining that I could have made that all important deduction as to the truth behind the whole story. Reading the Chronicle though, I could not because theirs was a lopsided account due to the fact that they do not like Freddie.
And this brings me to the point where you do not have to like someone to listen to them. It is that individual’s view or opinion whatever you might call it and one is entitled to it. The President is sometimes guilty of this when he keeps engaging himself in these verbal fights with Freddie. Valuable time is wasted when you keep responding to an attention seeker like Freddie, who basks in the sunlight of controversy. No wonder that “miasmic substance” was thrown in his… I say no more. Pesty critters like Freddie should be left to the writing public out there who deals with him swiftly and condignly.
So the point I am making is this, the matter of reporting and the dissemination of news has to do with the economics of the whole affair. It borders on ethical journalism. One does not have to walk the tightrope of morality here. All you have to do is be ethically correct; that is the only thing that counts in today’s world.
