The three-day Referees Course for schools taking part in the inaugural Scotia Bank/Pepsi Schools Football Academy opened on Monday with twenty two participants drawn from secondary schools in Georgetown, at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
The participating schools are North Georgetown Secondary, St. Joseph’s High, Tutorial High, Queen’s College, Marian Academy, Tucville Secondary, East Ruimveldt Secondary, Christ Church, Lodge Secondary, New Campbellville Secondary and St. George’s Secondary.
Leading referees’ instructors Lawrence “Sparrow” Griffith and Roy McArthur are the resource personnel conducting the course and during the sessions participants will be taught the laws of football.
The students will be exposed to both theoretical and practical sessions.
Griffith said that he was very pleased with the turnout of students at the opening session and added that participants seemed very keen to learn.
He said the students were identified to attend the programme with a view to officiating in the forthcoming Schools football tournament scheduled to begin next month as part of the seven-month academy.
Griffith expressed gratitude to the main sponsors Scotia Bank and Pepsi and the Ministry of Education for their support of the programme.
He also noted that assistance was also received from US-based Guyana Sports Development Council, Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Guyana Football Referees Council and alumni associations of the some of the participating schools.
The Academy was launched just over a month ago with a Coaching course for teachers.
Also, making an appearance was Head of the Sports Department within the Education Ministry Nicholas Fraser, who commended the initiative while promising his organisation’s continued support.
The Course is expected to resume today.
