Royal Salute, Romeo also score double victories

Three horses scored two victories each to come out joint champions when the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club in collaboration with the Lions Club of Corriverton held a successful one day horse race meet at the Alness Race track, Corentyne Berbice. However it was Dubai Duchess of the Sheriff, West Coast Berbice stable that took the spotlight with victories in the feature E class event and the very competitive G class race. The other outstanding performers were put on by Royal Salute of the Asif Baksh stable and Fazal Habibulla stable with crowing victories in the Co-feature Three year old race for Guyana bred horses and the I3 event. The other horse that was in top groove was Romeo with swam song victories in the J&K class race and the L class event.
A fair size crowd was on hand as the six horses took to the starting gates for the feature E class event sponsored by Ansa Mc Al Trading Guyana limited over 1400m with a first prize of $250,000 and the trophy. It was a battle as the animals left the starting gates in a bunch. Half way through the race there were still no clear favourites.
By the far turn, Peaceful of the Elcock stable and ridden by Jamaican Andron Findlay had taken the lead, but as the battle continued it was Dubai Duchess ridden by Colin Ross that opened up with a with a bolt of speed as it accelerated event as the others faded, cantering to an eventual easy victory. The Bailiff of the Habibulla stable with Yap Drepaul on the mount seized the opportunity to come through for second as Peaceful held on for third ahead of Delmur Gold Fourth.
Dubai Duchess had earlier run a tactical race to better the field in the very competitive G class1100M event. Showing that it is good at any distance the animal with Ross again on the perch came from behind and opened up a sizable lead as it took away the $180,000 and the Chico Chester trophy in convincing fashion. Bob’s Fortune, Pegasus Rising and the Gap occupied the other places.
It was a royal Day for Royal Salute of the Baksh Stable, ridden by Yap Drepaul and trained by Fazal Habibulla, the animal took care of things in the co-feature three year old 1100M event as it sprinted away with the $180,000 first prize and the Shawn Asrafali trophy. Left to pounder were J.D Junior, natural Mystic and Cash connection.
Royal Salute again with Drepaul on its back took top honours in the I3 and lower race collecting $100,000 and the V. Power Gas station trophy. Nordan Junior, Pinky and J.D Junior had to settle for the other placings.
Celebration Time of the Elcock stable with Kevin Paul on the mount was again in winner’s row with victory in the H class 1400M event. The animal now fully recovered from a major surgery, came from behind to beat Prospectors Pride, Dream Girl and Royal Champion. The win was worth $140,000 and the Fazal Habibulla Trophy.
The day proceedings began with a win for Savion of the Crawford stable. Ridden by Winston Appadu the animal edge out stablemate Mona Lisa with Drepaul on the mount as Diplomat and Extra Heat found the pace too hot to handle for the $110,000 first prize and the Hookumchand trophy.
Romeo of the Carlos Baker, Mahaicony stable and ridden by Daniel Baker had a romantic day and time on the track as it did not only won its first race, but took the opportunity to score the double. It first waltz away from the field in the J&K 1300m race and took with it $90,000 and the Ansa MC AL trophy from Bounty Flyer, Indian Boy and Natural Black.
It was a sweet victory again for Romeo in the L class event as D. Baker this time guided it to the $70,000 purse and trophy also over 1300m. Justin, Royal Intention and Grey Prospect rounded out the money.
Colin Ross, who recently returned from a sojourn overseas, took the top jockey honours with Fazal Habibulla being the top trainer. They both received trophies compliments of the Trophy Stall and the RCMTF& SF.
Over 68 horses participated in the day’s proceedings which had prize monies totaling over $3M.
The activity was marred with an injury to top jockey Paul Delph. It is understood that he was astride the animal Clear Victory, when the animal bolted as a result the jockey fell and broke his left foot. He has since been hospitalized.
