Like the Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation (TTCF), which is led by Rowena Williams (elected last November), the cycling fraternity ion Guyana has decided that it was time for a female President when they elected Cheryl Thompson to the top post at their Annual General Meeting on Saturday last at the Guyana Olympic Association, High Street.
Thompson, who is also President of Continental Cycle Club (CCC), replaces former national cyclist Hector Edwards. Taking over the important position of Secretary is Gemma Williams who also holds a similar post at CCC; holding this post on the previous executive was Carmen Pertab.
In what can be described as an upset, National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed who has been the back bone of the sport for years on end, was defeated for the position of Racing Secretary by Wayne De Abreu who serves CCC as the Second Vice President/Team Coach/Manager. Mohamed, who was nominated to contest the Presidential race but declined, will now serve as De Abreu’s Assistant.
Last Sunday’s elections saw an almost new executive on board as the membership felt it was time for a new vision to consolidate and improve the sport.
The Vice Presidents are Desmond Burchsmith, Bridgette Baines and Julian Alves who will also function as the Public Relations Officer. Theo Demonic is the new Treasurer with Cheryl Jones-Matthews functioning as the Assistant Secretary while the Treasurer is Peter Wilson.
The five Committee Members are: Royston Anderson, Mark Conway, Brian Allen, Roland Roberts and Loraine Joseph.
Thompson is no stranger to the top post in Guyana having acted in the position before for Edwards.
With a new Executive in place the membership would be looking forward to an exciting and vibrant calendar being put together to recapture the vigor and popularity the sport once enjoyed.
While the Federation only brings off one event for the year, their annual National Road Championships, there must be a meeting of the minds to come up with attractive events being run by the governing body.
Apart from Hassan Mohamed’s programmes at the National Park as well as Road Races, and the few Meets run off by some clubs, nothing is done for the sport at the federation level. The GCF however must give sanction for these events.
T&T is regarded as the hub for the sport in the Region and has already had a hectic year with TTCF President Rowena Williams staging a five-part road-racing series lasting from January 31 to February 28.
TTCF recently launched their three-weekend track series aimed at giving more exposure and preparation to their local riders, especially the juniors, ladies and seniors, who will be vying for positions in the upcoming Pan Am events.
Additionally, the “keep fits” are being used to prepare athletes for the Federation’s upcoming annual Easter International Grand Prix, which will be in honour of Sir Ellis Clarke.
Recently, T&T’s Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs’, Anil Roberts, announced plans to build a new cycling Velodrome as well as facilities for tennis and swimming within the next year. Roberts made the announcement on February 9.
