Ministry of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, yesterday lauded members of the country’s community policing groups for their role in assisting in the fight against crime.
Rohee made the remarks as the members prepared to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Community Policing in Guyana. Addressing senior members in the Ministry of Home Affairs conference room, Rohee stated that there would have been a gap in the crime fighting strategy had these groups not been in existence.
He said that at present, there are 280 Community Policing Groups countrywide, with some 4,750 members. But he said that there is a drive to establish more groups.
He disclosed that Government budgets some $15M annually for community policing. At present the groups have 19 vehicles, 18 motorcycles, bikes, three all terrain vehicles, 64 bicycles, and 10 boats. A number of grass cutters were also given to the groups recently to rid communities of bushes to discourage criminal elements.
Justice Donald Trotman was recently appointed Chairman of the ‘C’ Division Community Policing Executive Committee, while Mr. Godfrey Washington is the national Chairman of the Community Policing Executive and also Chairman of the ‘A’ Division Management Committee.
The CPGs will be holding a week of activities to mark their anniversary.
They include an inter-faith service on Sunday at the Mon Repos Primary, a parade from Mon Repos to the Lusignan tarmac, where Minister Rohee will address participants.
On Monday, an appreciation ceremony will be held in honour of road safety advocate Ms. Denise Dias at the boardroom of the Home Affairs Ministry, which will be followed by a meeting with an Assessment Team from CICAD to assist with the preparation of Guyana’s National Drug Master Plan.
