As Guyana reach 176-3 on truncated first day
By Sean Devers at Providence
Skipper Assad Fudadin led from the front with a responsible unbeaten 77 as host Guyana reached 176-3 against Barbados yesterday at the end of the truncated opening day of their Regional four-day cricket match at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
In the 65th First-Class game between the two sides since they clashed in the inaugural Regional First Class match in 1865, Fudadin and fellow left-hander Leon Johnson added 103 for the second wicket after Rajendra Chandrika (18) was caught behind off left-arm pacer Pedro Collins at 30-1.
The 25-year-old Fudadin remained to the close when bad light stopped play at 17:17hrs with 13 overs remaining to be bowled. The Rose Hall Town and Berbice Captain batted for 257 minutes and faced 194 balls. His eighth fifty at this level has been so far decorated with six boundaries, including two sixes.
But while Fudadin looks set for his maiden century today, the 23-year-old Johnson again failed to build on a good start when he was taken at deep mid-wicket; ‘slog-sweeping’ leg-spinner Ryan Layne after he reached his seventh fifty at this level in his 23rd match off the previous delivery.
While Johnson, who has played three ODIs for the West Indies failed to make full use of a flat track and lush green outfield to try and post his first century at this level, Fudadin, in his third match as Captain, batted with wonderful responsibility in sunny conditions after the entire first session was washed out due to overnight and morning rain to remain unbeaten at the close.
Royston Crandon was with him on nought after the South Americans, without a victory on home soil against Barbados since Andy Jackman scored a ton and Clyde Butts and Roger Harper shared 16 wickets between them in 1984, were invited to bat first by the Bajans.
With Shemroy Barrington being replaced in the squad by Gajanand Singh, Fudadin was asked to open. He batted for 41 minutes with Chandrika, who hit two fours and faced 33 balls before Collins, a former Test pacer, made the break through for Barbados, the most successful team in Regional First-Class cricket with 20 titles.
Fudadin, who played for the West Indies ‘A’ team against Pakistan ‘A’ last year, played some attractive shots while Johnson stroked off-spinner Roston Chase sweetly to the extra cover boundary in the last over before Tea.
Watched by a handful of spectators, Guyana progressed to 101-1 from 19 overs by Tea as Johnson and Fudadin repaired the early damage with confident stroke-play. At the break Fudadin was unbeaten on 39 and Johnson on 32 with their second wicket partnership worth 71 runs.
Just after the 100 partnership was posted Johnson fell at 133-2 after hitting eight fours in his 119-ball and 142-minute innings and his demise came just after Fudadin, also without a century at this level in 37 previous games, had reached his fifty from 116 balls and 172 minutes with a six and a four.
Gajanand Singh joined his Captain who clobbered Chase over long-off for six and then danced down the track to Layne in the next over to majestically stroke him to the extra boundary.
Singh, in his first game for the season, reached 19 before he was bowled by lively Test pacer Fidel Edwards as Guyana slipped to 175-3 just when the 42-run partnership was beginning to look dangerous.
Play on the second day is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs today.
