Four days of intense training in the intricacies of refereeing, judging and other boxing matters came to an end yesterday morning when the participants, 16 local referees/judges received their certificates at the WaterChris Hotel, Waterloo Street.
Facilitator of the course, Trinidadian James Beckles, was joined by President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Steve Ninvalle, Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar and Secretary of GABA, Shawn Richmond among other affiliates in commending the 16 local officials that participated in the course.
Mr. Ninvalle personally extended heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Beckles for unselfishly imparting knowledge to the local officials. Noting that this would stand the referee/judges in good stead, the GABA President juxtaposed the training course to the servicing of a motor vehicle. “Ever so often this machine could malfunction if it does not receive the requisite servicing,” Mr. Ninvalle said. He further committed to at least one such activity per year. “This is the beginning of what we hope to be a regular feature,” said the GABA President. He bemoaned the lack of adequate funding to facilitate the initiative at least twice per year.
The GABA boss further urged the officials to employ the strategies learnt towards the advancement of the sport as well as the local pugilists. “You will be required to apply the techniques on a daily basis while taking note that if you don’t use it you will lose it,” admonished Mr. Ninvalle.
Mr. Kumar also added his voice to the cause. He reminded the officials of the aim of the Government to enhance the fortunes of the boxers. Mr. Kumar reflected on the bronze medal Olympic achievement of former pugilist, Michael Parris even as he noted the difficulty of other sportspersons to emulate or eclipse the feat even after some 31 years. “Come 2012 I would like to see one of our sportsmen or women break that gold medal jinx,” exhorted Mr. Kumar.
Mr. Beckles next congratulated the participants for their devoted application to the lectures. He warned them that the lessons would require practice before they are fully mastered. He also urged the officials to engage in more collaborative work. “I would advise that you guys set up a regulatory commission that will oversee the smooth functioning of your activity,” urged the IABA official. “This way you would be better able to enhance your knowledge while ensuring that the boxers benefit,” he continued.
Vice President (GABA) Eustace Cuffy delivered the vote of thanks and reiterated the importance of Mr. Beckles’ input. He noted the efforts of Mr. Ninvalle in the advancement of the referees/judges even as he congratulated the bunch for staying to the end.
Mr. Cuffy singled out the efforts of coach and organizer of bouts, Terrence Poole who had worked strenuously to ensure that all systems were in place. The GABA Vice President also singled out Ramona Agard who has recently earned an elevation to a level three, star one referee. This new commendation qualifies Agard to practice her trade in all IABA sanctioned tournaments that involve the participation of 12 countries.
At the end of the forum the local officials received certificates of commendation. Those that participated in the course are Terrence Poole, Colin Waddle, Carl Franklyn, Ramona Agard, Rebecca Alexander, Sebert Blake, Derick Meredith, Wincel Thomas, Eustace Cuffy, Keith Campbell, Dexter Patterson, Mark Drake, Jermain Craig, Keith Norville, Derrick Younge and Richard Braithwaite.
