A television channel dedicated solely to religious programming is to be realised within three months.
A government statement Monday said that President Bharrat Jagdeo in 2005 had signaled his intentions for such programming, and on Monday met with members of the Inter Religious Organisation (IRO). Among those present were Reverend, Dr Kwame Gilbert, President of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) Fazeel Feroze, and Chairman of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), Bishop Juan Edghill.
The President told the religious stakeholders that he intends to see the realization of this project within the next three months.
The religious leaders have since agreed to the setting up of a Board of Directors, which will comprise representatives of the various umbrella bodies.
“The model proposed would see an equitable distribution of air time amongst the various bodies for the broadcasting of their religious programmes. A document has been circulated to members of the different religious faiths for vetting and ratification,” the government said in its release.
When asked about the approximate cost of the project, the President indicated that currently the various specifications are being considered to determine suitability, since the intention is that the coverage be as expansive as possible.
The President also took the opportunity to encourage the religious leaders to continue to work for peace and harmony in Guyana, and to repudiate any attempts made by persons to incite racial tension, as the nation prepares for its regional and national elections.
