Dear Editor,
My concern for this week is roads.. Roads in our country are an embarrassment to society. The people of this country should come together and fight for more roads.
The roadway on the East Bank of Demerara is a shame and this is highlighted during the morning rush hour. Grove/Diamond, the Demerara Harbour Bridge, Eccles and Ruimveldt have the traffic so jammed up that it tends to get working individuals-irritable by the time they arrive at work.
Traffic lights at Diamond-New Housing Scheme and at the Demerara Harbour Bridge work perfectly yet the police officers direct traffic.
What is the sense or what is the purpose of having working traffic lights when the police officer acts as though there are the traffic lights.
However, one of the most important aspects of this letter is to say that as a developing country, Guyana needs more roads everywhere. There are more vehicles in this country than people, so what do we do?
Tourists come to Guyana and talk about our narrow roads and our humongous traffic jams. Isn’t it shameful that we have so much unwanted land in our country and this situation prevails?
