Dear Editor,
As a practising agriculturist I would like to express my enthusiasm as it relates to the presentation of the 2011 Budget presentation which outlined significant achievements within the agriculture sector for 2010 and promises numerous opportunities and support for farmers and other stakeholders for this year.
At a time when we see a global food crisis showing its dreaded face, affecting First World countries, Guyana has been able to withstand such shocks due to smart investments made in the agriculture sector despite being chided by some sections bent on portraying doom.
I strongly believe that agriculture will further catapult this year as the major sector within our economy to ensure the livelihood of rural families, adequate and safe food at affordable prices and sustaining the demands of the Caribbean and further afield for fresh and processed agricultural produce.
A lot has been done to modernize the sector by the vibrant Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud, who has led a team of competent technicians who have been visible across this country with solutions to support agriculture expansion.
Enterprising farmers are elated at the efforts being made to make their work a little easier, to share knowledge and experiences to improve agricultural practices, thereby reducing input costs and maximizing returns.
In the near future, we will all witness the enormous significance of agriculture globally, taking the many challenges into consideration such as climate change and other trade related issues.
The time is ripe for us to put our shoulders to the wheel to facilitate the process to ensure Guyana’s agriculture continue on its current track. Kudos to all those associated with agriculture in Guyana.
