Dear Editor,
I write in response to the letter by Mr. Hamilton Green titled “Forbes Burnham had the ability to identify individuals of competence and loyalty to serve the people of the State of Guyana in the Kaieteur News of 4-28-26.
Mr. Green wrote “Say what you like about Forbes Burnham, one of his strengths was his ability to identify individuals of competence and loyalty to serve the people of the State of Guyana. As a result, there was established the Venezuela-Guyana mixed boundary commission headed by Sir Donald Jackson, and included legal luminaries, such as Mohamed Shahabuddeem and (sic) Shirley Field-Ridley.”
Can Mr. Green explain why with all the wise men associated with the PNC’s Forbes Burnham the latter wrecked Guyana’s economy resulting in a mass exodus of thousands of talented Guyanese from their native land?
What Mr. Green fails to admit was the fact that the border misunderstanding with Venezuela resulted from an Anglo-American conspiracy which installed the PNC-UF into government in 1964. The principal aim was to remove the 1960s PPP from office through PNC-UF collusion with the CIA in fomenting race riots targeting Indo Guyanese and Indo Guyanese businesses. Would Mr. Green ever apologize for his involvement in rigging elections and bullying opposition supporters? How would he explain Georgetown becoming the filthiest garbage city in the Caribbean under his watch? All this is now public record as per CIA declassified documents.
At a time when concerns have been raised by Mr. Lincoln Lewis about exclusion of the opposition from national issues it is fitting to note that no PPP representative was on the boundary commission. The PPP disagreed strongly with the ruling government on how to handle the border issue and opposed the Agreement, with the PPP voting against it in the House of Assembly
Mr. Green boasts that Mr. Burnham had very competent and loyal individuals in his PNC government. Yes it is very true as it is very clear that Mr. Green is, up to this day, a very loyal kikuyu to Mr. Burnham. But is Mr. Green competent and without scandal?
Mr. Charles Sohan writing in the SN of 4-16 2024 titled “Elder Green should not cast stones if he lives in a glass house” recorded that “In the 1970’s, I was employed as a Civil Engineer by the Ministry of Works and Hydraulics (MW&H). The then Minister was no other than Hamilton Green, the most powerful minister in Prime Minister Burnham’s Government at that time. As Minister of MW&H he acquired steel sheet pilings earmarked for use on Guyana’s sea defense to construct a paal-off using MW&H labour around his house lot located at upper Durban Street. This paal-off could be seen from the street. At the time no one was allowed to buy gov’t steel sheet piling stock-piled at the Kingston Wharf for their private use. Secondly, Minister Green gave his private trucking company a contract to deliver white sand for reconstruction of the Georgetown seawall.
These and other questionable transactions were executed during his tenure as MW&H Minister, and to this day he has never provided any answer when confronted with questions as to why these transactions and others were executed without being reviewed and approved by the responsible authority and recorded for subsequent audit”.
Mr. Green writes,”I write this letter with a prayer that those documents and others have been preserved and therefore avoid us the tedium of doing work that was already done by competent super patriots.” I too write this letter with a prayer that Mr. Green would repent and clear his record for truth and reconcilliation. How too can Mr. Green then become a ‘competent super patriot’?
Sincerely,
Sultan Mohamed
