Government ferries moved over 232,000 passengers and 30,000 vehicles between January 1, and December 14, last, the Transport and Harbours Department has said.
According to General Manager, Kevin Trim, almost 100,000 tons of cargo was also moved during the period.
Passengers earned the government coffers $6.8M, while vehicle crossings raised $123M and cargo $227M.
In the area of Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), over 800 vessels were piloted to city wharves, a slight rise over last year’s figures.
However, cargo entering the country dropped by over 200,000 tonnes to 4.77 million tonnes.
It was disclosed that authorities are finding it hard to make do with the three ferries plying the Essequibo River with the large vessel to Bartica proving a challenge as more and more persons are travelling.
Recently, the Transport and Harbours Department added another trip to Bartica on top of the current two.
However, while earning almost $700M in revenues, the Transport and Harbours Department continued its dismal performance expending $1.28B, $580M more than it made.
MARAD also reported, yesterday, during its year-end report to the media that revenue collection has risen by some $14M to $597M.
