The inclement weather did not deter scores of persons from clamouring to testing sites in the ten administrative regions to know their HIV status on Monday, the first day of National Week of Testing.
According to the National AIDS Programme Secretariat (NAPS), persons from all walks of life filed into sites, and where necessary sat and waited patiently to know their HIV status.
National Week of Testing is being observed under the theme “Confidential and Reliable! Get tested.”
NAPS said the City Mall and the Government Technical Institute (GTI) were among the centres with impressive turnouts.
Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, said he is heartened by the response of persons who braved the bad weather to come out and get tested and expressed optimism that the Ministry of Health will achieve or possibly surpass the target of 30,000 as Guyanese have come a long way with counseling and testing.
He noted that it is anticipated that the Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) would allow persons to be better educated, sensitised and motivated to utilise the services and testing sites available countrywide.
In excess of 400 testing sites are currently available countrywide and are being manned by trained and certified testers/counselors.
NAPS said quality assurance is high on the agenda during this week to ensure the reliability of the process.
The VCT Programme was introduced in the early 1990s as part of a comprehensive service to all Guyanese and has been a feature of National HIV/AIDS prevention strategy in Guyana and many other countries.
