A volunteer teacher attached to the Sans Souci Primary School, has been detained by the police for allegedly slapping an 11-year-old pupil. The teacher has denied the incident.
This newspaper was told that on Monday afternoon, another child of the school went home to the assaulted child’s parents and told them that a teacher had slapped their son. The parents immediately reported the matter to the police.
On Tuesday, the parents went to the school and complained to the teacher in charge, who in turn advised the parents to return to school on Thursday since the teacher involved was absent and since yesterday was a holiday.
The parents were dissatisfied and reportedly took their son from the school and returned to the police station.
The police then arrested the teacher. Up to press time he was still in the custody of the police.
When contacted, the Region Three Education Office said that it was only informed of the incident on Tuesday and investigations were to commence on Thursday because of the holiday.
President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union expressed surprised that the police were involved in a matter that was a school matter for which there were provisions for dealing with it in the education system.
Recently, police at Wakenaam detained a number of school children for about four hours as they were going home from school. The children were told that they were using the road improperly.
An investigation into the matter is currently being conducted by the police themselves.
Previously, policemen in the division conducted lectures to school children during Road Safety Week on the use of the roads, but this appears to be a thing of the past since no lectures are being held.
