The discovery of a scam by vigilant postmasters on the Essequibo Coast, in relation to the distribution and payments of Public Assistance vouchers by a senior probation officer attached to the Region Two Democratic Council, has sparked immediate investigations by the relevant authorities into the matter.
A Senior Probation Officer alerted this newspaper to the scam after a recent incident, which occurred at the Anna Regina Post Office Corporation.
According to the postmaster at Anna Regina, recently an individual approached the Post Officer with three vouchers for payment. The postmaster, who is the officiating officer of the Anna Regina Post Office and who was at the counter at the time, decided to attend to the individual.
He began by questioning the source of the vouchers and received inaccurate information. Immediately, the newspaper was told the postmaster, declined the payments and called for an immediate investigation into the matter.
It turned out that the same individual was never registered, nor had an identification. The postmaster noted that individuals who are issued with five or more vouchers would venture to various offices on the Coast where they would receive payments.
After submitting their findings, another three senior post officers out of Georgetown were summoned to the Coast, where the probation officer also unearthed an inventory into other previously hidden scams.
The PM said the investigation which is ongoing also revealed that some Postal officers were in collusion with persons who went for payments with more that one vouchers.
