There have been misplaced interpretations as to why the Ministry of Works bypassed my home when clearing the southern trench on the Railway Embankment. People came up to me and accused Minister Robeson Benn and President Bharrat Jagdeo of being petty. That was the consensus.
The publisher of this newspaper, Mr. Glenn Lall has a different assessment. He said that the idea was to get the message across to all Guyanese that “we can do what we want.” No doubt there is a little bit of all of this that went into the decision. But there is another analysis and it centres on the concept of fear.
The PPP Government is afraid of a resurgence of “mo fyaah/slo fyaah.” The memory of that era is alive inside of Freedom House. It came close to toppling the regime. To stop demonstrations and protest, the PPP, since the PSU strike in July 1999, has decided on a vicious campaign of intimidation and it has worked. It has been successful for three reasons.
First, the population feels that the upper echelons of the police and army have been politically seduced by the ruling cabal with offers of extreme generosity and therefore will be unprofessional in their conduct. The most recent example of this unprofessional behaviour has to do with the blatant seizure of the truck that transported protesting school children from Patentia to Georgetown.
Secondly, citizens feel that the opposition, especially the main plank, the PNC and including the AFC, is no longer interested in opposing the regime in meaningful ways, much less see a virtue in confrontation.
One of the AFC leaders, Sheila Holder, has gone so far as to praise the Government for doing some good things – obviously the manifestation of an overworked imagination. Thirdly, critics and opposition figures are afraid of the violent and cruel drug men. Do not expect policemen and soldiers to attack you in the night, they will be the messengers of the drug men.
Journalistic investigation revealed that it was one of the phantoms who worked with Roger Khan that was selected to target me when that miasmic substance was thrown in my face early this year. Also, in June, when goons attempted to stop me from speaking at the academic conference of the Guyana Historical Institute, we saw a well known phantom transport the thugs in a very expensive SUV and inside was a CANU officer. This gentleman was one of Roger Khan’s deadly killers.
It is no secret in Georgetown that these phantoms are going to go on a violent spree during the election campaign. The truth is that in Guyana the weapon of fear has worked for Freedom House and New Garden Street. When those workers were told not to clean the trench in front of me, the object was to let them know that the Government is mean-spirited and will fight anyone. The intention was for those workers to tell other Guyanese not to mess with the Government. And maybe those workers have done that, thus the dictators have achieved their objective.
Guyana is a huge cemetery of frightened corpses except for five of us – me; the publisher of this paper, Mr. Glenn Lall; Mr. Christopher Ram; Mark Benschop and Lincoln Lewis. They are not satisfied with their method of attacks on the five of us so far.
An editorial in this newspaper spoke of the role of the GRA in the pursuit of Mr. Lall and even his wife’s store. They know they can’t shut down the man’s newspaper. They are hurting from the exposure of Mr. Ram and the nasty things written about him have proven to be ineffective.
Mark Benschop has told President Jagdeo that he has learnt no lesson. Remember when Jagdeo released Benschop from jail he said he hoped Benschop would have learnt his lesson. Well we all know how Benschop reacted to that. Then there is radical trade unionist, Lincoln Lewis, who cannot be appeased.
My theory is that as the months unfold leading up to the election, the five of us will be targeted for violent assault. Not only do I believe this but I can feel it beneath my skin. I can feel it in my chemistry.
The elites in the power establishment know that they will lose the next general election and will be prosecuted by the new government. Between now and the day of defeat, they are going to attempt to hurt the five of us.
