A response to Harry Gill’s defence of Kaieteur News
Dear Editor,
I write in response to a missive from Harry Gill, carried in the November 9 edition of the Kaieteur News, in which he took issue with my opinion that the Kaieteur News is fast attaining tabloid status due to its sensational style of reporting.
First of all, I must express disappointment with Mr. Gill for his personal attacks on me since, as an adult (assuming that he is), one would expect differences in opinion to be expressed in a constructive and mature manner. Healthy debates in the letter columns are indeed welcomed and encouraged throughout the free world.
In my letter I cited an example in which the Kaieteur News apparently deliberately misrepresented the facts in a report on the Neesa Gopaul case.
Mr. Gill seemed to be enraged that I cited this example. His ramblings suggest that it’s perfectly ok for facts to be misrepresented by the Kaieteur News in an attempt to sensationalize and politicize an issue. In fact, Mr. Gill shamelessly asks the question; “you want Kaietuer News to look more like a regular newspaper rather than a tabloid?”
He then answered his own question by saying, “I’m sure you’ll see the change when the Government you seem to be defending, start being accountable to the people, and its leaders stop being the bunch of dictators that they are.”
Now, if this is not an admission by Mr. Gill that Kaieteur News is indeed fast attaining tabloid status, then what is?
Mr. Gill has also exhibited some degree of narrow-mindedness, since he equates a criticism of the Kaieteur News with being a “defender of the government”. This is a remarkable leap by Mr. Gill, who clearly, from his tone and ramblings, supports the printing of inaccurate and fictitious reports…once it is directed at the Government.
